Acknowledgments
The creation of any book requires the talents and work of many people. But the level of care, commitment, and attention on the part of so many people who made this book happen surely exceeds anyone's expectations. It is truly a tribute to Charles Schulz's legacy that so many people were inspired to celebrate Peanuts's 60th anniversary by comtributing so much to this book.
A special thank-you goes to Jean Schulz for generously sharing the resources of the Schulz Museum and Creative Associates to create the content for this book, and also for her heartfelt introduction to the book.
Editor's Note
All the quotes that appear throughout the book are directly from Charles M. Schulz, either in print or in interviews. References to each one's origin are cited on page 534.
Because of varied production methods over the fifty years of Peanuts, the Sunday cartoons included in this book appear in a range of presentations. Some are the black line only, some are scanned from newspaper tearsheets, some are the original Sunday color, and some have been colored for this book.
Foreword
I grew up, I'm sure like most of you reading this, spending many a rainy day poring over Peanuts books. In fact, I pored over them on sunny days as well. I read them over and over, memorizing every gag and pose. I drew copies of my favorite strips. I knew I didn't want to be a comic strip artist (there was something rather daunting about coming up with ideas for a strip every single day), but I was obsessed.
More than anything, I wanted to be able to draw expressions like Schulz did. A few simple lines and he'd capture these incredibly strong, specific emotions. And they were funny!
They showed so clearly what was going on inside those characters' minds, and to me that was absolutely magical.
Schulz's work has definitely had a strong impact on me and what I do. And I'm not the only one. It's not uncommon to hear Peanuts shorthand spoken around the building at Pixar. "All I want is what's coming to me. All I want is my fair share." "You're right-needs more crayons." "I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsie, but I changed my mind." If you can't picture the strips that these quotes come from, you've got some studying to do!
Rain on shine, open this book and get cracking.
